Playing catch up from last week

We made it through Week 5 community day today and I've come to the conclusion that community days are EXHAUSTING!!!  I am not even a tutor (I'm sure that day will come) and I am ready for a nap as soon as we get home each week!!

Here are a couple snapshots from week 4 (last week):

Davis did not want to leave my side at the nursery so he came to class for a little while until he was ready to separate.

Maci's class joined the 'big kids' for a science experiment about water pollution.

Art is one of Maci's favorite parts of community day and last week they learned about abstract art.  The kids were given their names and asked to use abstract art to fill in each of the letters.  Of course Maci used mermaid scales in one of her letters!

Here is the whole group with their abstract art.

I was the only parent in this week's class so I got to take all the girls to the restroom and you know there was a little bit of playing happening!

That night Davis fell asleep on my lap while Maci read to us - so sweet!

Maci gives me a hard time anytime I ask her to read phonics books from the reading set so instead I went to the library and got a handful of level 1 reader books and I'm having her practice reading with those.  She likes it a lot more and they are longer so she gets more practice.  Fine with me!

Last weekend, we got another grandparent visit from Papa!  He arrived Friday night and stayed through the day Saturday and we had a blast walking the Vilano bridge and going to the beach afterwards.  Great day together!

In total, we walked around 2.5 miles.  Fun activity for us all!

Along the way, we saw some dolphins swimming and had to stop and look!

There was a walkway on the other side of the bridge that we had to check out and see if there was any more wildlife.  Only saw a bird, but I'm sure we will check this area out again and hopefully see more.

Love that we have become such an active family!

Then we hit Vilano Beach!!

The water and weather was perfect!  The waves were a little rough as Hurricane Florence was beating up SC and NC, but we just stayed close to shore.  LOTS of surfers were out and it was fun to watch them.

This guy is always the last one to drag out of the water.  Such a beach boy!

She did this to herself!!

Walking across A1A back to the truck.

Beautiful day at the beach!!

We hit up a local restaurant to watch the Gator game before Papa went back home.

The next day, after church we went to Bealls and Maci pulled the shopping cart down on her and busted her lip open.  Scary for her, but she survived and hopefully will be more careful with shopping carts from now on!

Working on her plant cell craft.

Week 4 science - What are some parts of a plant cell??  This is our model including a cell wall, cell membrane, vacuole, nucleus, mitochondria, golgi bodies, cytoplasm, and chloroplasts - just using things I already had in my craft bin.

We have been practicing our songs to help remember the history facts, Latin, skip counting, and the timeline.  We listen to them while driving in the truck and we have the Greek and Romans gods song and Seven Wonders of the Ancient World song down pretty good.  We have decided to dress up as Greek gods for Halloween - that should be fun!  Once we get through the entire timeline song for 'age of ancient empires', Maci wants to make a video of her singing and doing the hand motions for all the events.  I'm glad she's finding learning to be fun!  The Latin is coming along for us both; now we are learning about noun endings singular and plural so far in 1st and 2nd declensions (whatever that is!).  If it weren't for the songs, I'd be lost at this point!!

Once my phone syncs the pictures from this week, I'll get another post up.  We had fun making Roman helmets and learning a little about the Roman republic and empire and another exhausting day at community day today which included a fire drill.  Stay tuned!!

Here goes nothing!

Starting next week, we are officially going to start our homeschooling journey!  After several years of consideration, (yes, this has been on our minds for YEARS) we decided to be a homeschooling family and we are getting started with a well-established homeschooling method called Classical Conversations.  We have joined a community that meets Thursday mornings for 24 weeks throughout the year and yesterday we went to our very first back-to-school orientation! Maci just turned 5 in June (how did that happen?!) which means that she is old enough to be enrolled in kindergarten.  She completed VPK (voluntary pre-kindergarten) last year at the daycare she and Davis have been attending for the last couple of years and is more than excited to get started with school again!  She is in the Abecedarians class and her tutor is Mrs. Schulkers.  There are six children in her class ranging from 4 to 5 years old.  With the exceptions of the weeks I will be...

Getting into our groove

So, just like I figured, I wouldn't stay consistent with this blog.  Really, I like to type on my laptop while sitting on the couch with the family, but during week 2, my laptop obtained a virus and now is on the fritz until I can get someone who knows what they are doing to repair it.  But...I'll play a little bit of catch up now... Things that we have found that work for us: - White board is cleared Sunday night with the next week's memory work added and new timeline cards replaced.  Martin and I like to read the description on the back of each timeline card to catch us up a bit on what the significance of each event played in our history. - Monday night school session after dinner.  We review the memory work on the board and work through the science and history memory work that I found on TeachersPayTeachers.com (sometimes day 1 and 2 for the week). - Martin enjoys working with Maci on her skip counting.  She's getting really good with signing her num...

We made it through week 1!

We made it through the first week of homeschooling pretty smoothly! Monday: Martin and I both went back to work on Monday and the kids went to daycare.  Maci was excited to go back to daycare; Davis was not!  After work that night, we all sat around the table and did some school work.  I found some materials on TeachersPayTeachers.com for the science and history memory work and that makes it very easy for us to practice those facts.  Once she's completed those worksheets, we cut and glue them into a notebook which will serve as a portfolio of some of her work.  We also reviewed some of the timeline cards and counting by 2's to 30 in both English and ASL.   I have all the facts written on the dry erase board to help us all remember what we are supposed to be learning that week.  I got a ticket holder like restaurants use to hold the timeline cards out for us to see while we are memorizing the sequence throughout the week.   ...
